As a parent, I know how tough it can be to keep up with our kids in the digital world. The internet is amazing for learning and staying connected, but it also has its fair share of dangers. That's why I'm excited to share some resources that have really helped my family stay safe online.
One program I always recommend is Google's Be Internet Awesome. It's completely free and teaches kids about digital safety in a way that actually keeps them engaged. Think of it as your family's friendly guide to being smart and confident online.
Our lives have moved online in a big way. Kids do homework online, we bank online, we stream entertainment, and we stay connected through social media. For children who've grown up with tablets and smartphones, the line between real life and online life can get pretty blurry.
They might not think twice about sharing personal information or clicking on suspicious links. And honestly, adults face plenty of digital threats too. Identity theft, phishing emails, and data breaches happen every single day.
The program breaks digital safety into five easy-to-remember ideas:
Kids learn to think before posting anything online. Once something's out there, it's really hard to take back. This section helps them understand who might see their posts and how it could affect them later.
With so much misinformation floating around, kids need to spot fake news and scams. This teaches them to question what they see online and recognize when something seems off.
Strong passwords and privacy settings matter. This part shows kids how to protect their personal information and explains why they shouldn't share everything with strangers online.
Just because you're behind a screen doesn't mean you can be mean. This encourages respect and empathy online, and teaches kids to stand up against cyberbullying.
This might be the most important one. Kids learn that they should always come to a trusted adult if something online makes them uncomfortable or scared.
The program includes a free game called Interland where kids can practice these skills. My kids actually enjoyed playing it, which is a win in my book.

Beyond programs like Be Internet Awesome, here are some practical things that have worked for our family:
If I'm constantly on my phone, I can't expect my kids to be any different.
Here's something I discovered that really changed how we approach digital safety. When I was looking at mobile phone plans, I found that VLE Mobile does something different from other carriers. Instead of just offering phone service and maybe some basic security features as an expensive add-on, they include comprehensive digital protection in all their plans.
So what does that actually mean? Well, every VLE Mobile plan comes with identity theft protection that includes up to $5 million in insurance coverage. Most standalone services charge $20 to $30 per month just for that level of protection.
You also get dark web monitoring, which sounds intense but is actually really important. After data breaches, your email and passwords can end up for sale on the dark web. This service watches for that and alerts you so you can change your passwords immediately.
The credit monitoring across all three major bureaus is another big one. You get alerts if anything suspicious happens with your credit, which is how you catch fraud early.
There's also a VPN to protect your privacy online, antivirus protection for your devices, and spam call blocking, which alone is worth it for me.
For families, the parental controls are genuinely helpful. You can manage screen time, filter content, and monitor online activity across multiple devices. And here's what really sets it apart: family plans protect up to 10 adults and unlimited children. So you're not paying for separate security subscriptions for each person in your family.
Their plans start at $25 per month, and you get automatic access to multiple networks for better coverage, unlimited data rollover, and free global roaming in over 80 countries.
There's no contract, which I appreciate. I'm not locked into anything if circumstances change.
The digital world isn't going anywhere, and neither are the risks that come with it. But by using free resources like Be Internet Awesome, talking openly with our families, and choosing services that take digital safety seriously, we can navigate it all with a lot more confidence.
For us, combining education through programs like Be Internet Awesome with the comprehensive protection that comes with our VLE Mobile service has given us real peace of mind.
I'd encourage you to check out Be Internet Awesome with your kids. And if you're in the market for a new phone plan anyway, it's worth looking at what VLE Mobile offers. Sometimes the best solutions are the ones that just make sense.
